I’m Fiona Vanhout, a 2D game artist and illustrator based in Kent, United Kingdom.
I specialise in character and environment design, art direction, and visual development for games, with experience taking projects from early concepts and placeholder assets through to polished, production-ready visuals.
Alongside creating artwork, I work directly with Unity, Godot and Spine2D, giving me a practical understanding of how art needs to function inside a game. I’m comfortable adapting assets around gameplay, animation and technical requirements, and particularly enjoy helping projects establish or revitalise a cohesive visual identity.
My broader experience includes UI design, pixel art, marketing artwork, 2D animation, texture painting and basic 3D work. I’ve worked across a range of styles and projects, both independently and as part of collaborative development teams.
I have been working professionally as a commissioned artist since 2018 and studied Illustration at the School of Art and Design of Tarragona (EADT).
Experience and Education
2018–Present
Commissioned Artist
I have worked with a wide range of clients on commissioned illustration and concept art, with a particular focus on character artwork. Working across different briefs, audiences and visual styles has given me extensive experience adapting my work to the needs of individual projects while maintaining clear artistic direction and strong fundamentals.
2022–2024
Tarragona School of Art and Design
I studied Illustration at the School of Art and Design of Tarragona (EADT) in Spain. The programme combined traditional and digital techniques and included work across illustrative, educational, promotional and literary projects.
2025
A Dark Forest
I joined the open-source development team of A Dark Forest, an atmospheric incremental game developed in Godot. I led the redesign of its placeholder artwork and helped establish a cohesive visual direction better suited to the game’s eerie atmosphere.
2025–2026
Red Rain
I initially joined Red Rain as a portrait artist before moving into the role of Lead Art Director. I worked alongside artists with different specialities and visual styles, helping define the project’s art direction and maintain visual consistency across the game.
2025–2026
The Shattered
I approached The Shattered with a proposal to revitalise its visual presentation and subsequently joined the project as its Art Director. My work has involved establishing a new visual direction and extensively redesigning and improving the game’s existing artwork ahead of its planned release.
